Energy Efficiency Opportunities

The EEO program is managed by the Australian Government. Companies that trip the EEO thresholds are legally required to participate in the program.

Who needs to register for EEO?

Big energy users (more than 0.5 petajoules (PJ) of electricity, natural gas, fuel, oil or a combination of the above) are required by law to register and report their energy use.

Examples of businesses that DO need to register include: Amcor, Bunker Freight Lines, Gold Coast City Council, Kellogg Australia, Minara Resources, Ramsay Health Care, Tyco Water and Westfield.

Most industry sectors are covered by the EEO program, however a temporary exemption (until 2009) has been granted to Corporations whose main business is to generate electricity or transmit or distribute natural gas or electricity.

How do I know if I use more that 0.5 PJ of energy?

0.5 PJ of energy per year is equivalent to:
  • 139,000 megawatt hours of energy (139 million kilowatt hours)
  • 9,000 tonnes of LNG or 10,000 tonnes of LPG
  • 13 megalitres (13 million litres) of diesel
If you are spending $6-11 million on electricity, $3-4 Million on gas or $18-21 million on diesel (depending on prices) or some combination of the above, you will probably trip the threshold.

When do my obligations start? What is the timeline for actions I must take?

The financial year you first used more than 0.5 PJ of energy determines the timing of your obligations. This is your TRIGGER YEAR.  HAC can help you meet all of the legislated requirements and help you go "beyond compliance" - where your organisation can extract some real value from your EEO compliance.
